Irrigation System Update and Course Status Report

After spending two hours on Saturday adjusting the irrigation schedule for our 1300 sprinklers to apply 0.10 inches of water, the system unfortunately crashed around 9:55 PM. Following this, I contacted NSN Toro support at 3:00 AM; it seems a recent software update has disrupted our computer systems.

Impact on Your Game: The system restarted late last night, which delayed most of the watering programs. As a result, watering continued until just before your tee time, leaving less time for the surfaces to dry.

FAQ: Can we water faster?
Our system is limited to a maximum output of 1500 gallons per minute from two pump stations (750 gpm each), and each sprinkler outputs 30 gpm. This setup allows us to operate 50 sprinklers simultaneously.

With 1300 sprinklers divided into 26 groups of 50, each group ran for 9 minutes and 38 seconds to apply 0.10 inches of water. This schedule means the entire course requires about 4 hours and 33 minutes for watering. Additionally, many stations use a cycle and soak method—running each sprinkler for 5 minutes, pausing for 10-20 minutes to allow the water to soak in, then running again for the final 5 minutes, which significantly extends our watering window.

Today’s Course Status:

  • Cart Status: Full carts
  • Stimp Meter Reading: 10 feet 9 inches
  • Course Setup: Full pins and tees
  • Greens: Mowed
  • Bunker Maintenance: Greenside bunkers raked by one staff member
  • Irrigation Challenges: Hand watering sections of holes 16 and 17, including the 17 tee. A wire break in the 17 rough remains unlocated due to a back-ordered wire tracer. We may borrow this tool from Golf BC or Capilano.

Tonight’s Watering Plan: Due to last night’s delays, we will apply 150% of the usual evapotranspiration rate to fairways and tees. Greens will not be watered tonight to facilitate the absorption of the fertilizer and wetting agent applied on Monday.

Upcoming Maintenance Schedule:

  • April 15 – 27: Level and resod 5th hole tee decks; lower remaining section of 8 tee.
  • April 29 – May 10: Rebuild 3rd hole left greenside bunkers.
  • May 13 – May 24: Rebuild the 5th hole bunker.
  • May 27 – June 14: Rebuild the practice bunker and repair the back of “15A” South green.
  • June 17 – 21: Path grading.
  • June 24 – TBD: Redo walking paths/track mats on holes 14 and 15.

Additional Notes: As soon as the main tee deck on hole 2 is playable, we will resod the forward tee deck. Our Natural Area Management Plan will be posted as the invasive species removal project progresses.
